Plantronics Partnership

We are happy to announce that Shroud of the Avatar will be a featured game at the Plantronics booth at E3. We want the audio landscape of SotA to be as immersive as the visual landscape and Plantronics is a great partner for us to work with on achieving that goal. During our one year anniversary promotions you may have noticed that some of the prizes we were giving out were Plantronics headsets and at that time we hinted about more to come, like this, from that partnership. Richard Garriott, Starr Long, and Finn Staber will be representing the game at the Plantronics booth in the South Hall at booth 515 so if you are at the show come see us!

If you’re a fan of Plantronics Gaming Headsets (like we are), then check out their Plantronics Gaming Facebook page, and if you like what you see then give them a “Like”!

Lord Town Homes

This week we’re introducing the new Benefactor Lord Town Home and the remodeled Founder Lord Town Home, shown here side-by-side:

Founder Lord Town Home

The revised Founder Lord Town Home (included in the Lord pledge tier) is comprised of 3 floors with 5 rooms (including a secret room), a second floor side deck, and a large rear deck on the third floor with a balcony wrapping around the front and sides of the house.

Based on feedback from our Lord backers, Bob Cooksey and Michael Hutchison did some major remodeling to the original Founder Lord Town Home, including:

  • Entire home was scaled up 10%-12%
  • A closet was added underneath the stairwell on first floor
  • Crenelations on the 2nd story, side turret balconies were lowered for better visibility
  • Staircase on second floor moved to middle of floor
  • The second floor was enlarged by expanding the space under the rear roof deck
  • Two rooms were added to the third floor
  • A small secret room was added
  • The size of the third floor deck was greatly increased by expanding the rear deck and by adding front-facing and side-facing sections

Benefactor Lord Town Home

The Benefactor Lord Town Home (included in the Lord pledge tier) is comprised of 3 floors with 7 rooms (including a secret room), and two front-facing decks on the third floor.

Royal Founder Rewards

We’ve completed in-game versions of three more of our uniquely identifiable Royal Founder items (see Starr’s forum post for complete list). “Royal Founders” are backers that have a pledge made prior to May 20, 2013 (see FAQ): Royal Founder items have a white background, differentiating them from the blue background of “Founder” items. The three Royal Founder items for this week are:

  • Special Founder Level plaque as a digital, in-game decoration for your house (available in the Citizen thru Lord of the Manor pledge rewards)
  • The Royal Founder Crystal Sword, a single-use weapon, capable of killing almost any enemy you encounter with a single blow (included in the Founder pledge rewards).
  • A Creature Taming Call used to tame an elusive monster that an ordinary player could never tame! (included in the Royal Artisan pledge rewards)

New Dev Team Member: Alyssa Reuter, Technical Artist

Join us in welcoming our newest Dev Team member, Alyssa Reuter, bringing our total team size to thirty-nine. As our team’s first technical artist, Alyssa will be contributing to SotA’s VFX and other visual areas of the game. Here’s her bio from the Dev Team page:

Where Can I Play Pixie Hollow

Alyssa Reuter first decided that she wanted to be a game developer after exploring the ages of Myst when she was seven years old. In 2010, she was part of the first graduating class of Carnegie Mellon University’s integrated Computer Science and Arts program, where she focused on digital and interactive media. While at school, she also completed internships at EA (Command & Conquer 4) and SilverTree Media (Disney’s Pixie Hollow Online).

After graduating, Alyssa took a six month break from games to study fashion design at Parson’s New School of Design in New York City, and then decided to move to Austin for the warmer weather. She started at Edge of Reality in early 2011, at first working as a VFX artist on The Sims 3: Pets and then as a technical artist / engineer on Loadout, Mass Effect Compilation (PS3), and most recently, Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark.

She is now happy to be on the Shroud of the Avatar team, helping to create a visually rich, immersive interactive world with her unique blend of technical and artistic abilities!

Upcoming Duke and Lord of the Manor Events

On November 14, 2014, in Austin, TX, Portalarium is hosting a VIP Design Roundtable and Portalarium Studio Tour as part of the basic rewards for the Duke pledge tier (and above). We will begin the morning of November 14th at the Portalarium studios for a tour and roundtable design meeting with Richard Garriott. Later that afternoon, the VIPs will attend breakout design sessions with the development team.

On the following two days, Saturday and Sunday, November 15 & 16, our guests are encouraged to check out Rustic Dragon’s HoBLotH II: Legends of the Hearth (see details below).

HoBLotH II: Legends of the Hearth

Pixie Hollow Mmo

On November 16th and 17th 2013, Rustic Dragon’s Hearth of Britannia opened its Indianapolis, IN doors to thirty Ultima, Shroud of the Avatar, and Lord British fans across the country for the Hearth of Britannia Lords of the Hearth (HoBLotH), a 1:1 recreation of the meal served just a month prior at Britannia Manor IV. There was Britannian food, plenty of libations, celebrity guests, themed activities, and a host of garbed attendees.

One year later, Rustic will once again assemble a semi-exclusive group of fans for HoBLotH II: Legends of the Hearth. While the details won’t starting coming into public focus until July, the date and location are set: November 15th and 16th at Castleton, Lord British’s own Medieval village in Austin, TX. While many things will be different, much will remain the same: there will still be delicious food, plenty of libations, celebrity guests, and intense participation required to complete the themed activities.

Keep thine eyes peeled toward the Hearth of Britannia’s website. In July, details will surface. RSVP and attendee vetting will also open at that time. Until then, thou canst peruse the original HoBLotH Event page to fuel thy speculation.

Only 3 BotA Chapters Left!

The latest installment of the serialized SotA novel, Blade of the Avatar (BotA), written by Tracy Hickman & Richard Garriott, is now available for download! If you are a Founder, or you purchased BotA in the Add-On Store, then you will find a download link for the current installment of the novel on your personal SotA account page (log into SotA website and click on “Account” in the top-right corner). If you are a Kickstarter backer you’ll need to have your Kickstarter account linked to the SotA website (click here for instructions to link your Kickstarter account).

Here is a brief excerpt of the latest installment (illustration by Denis Loubet):

“Are you sure this is going to work?” Syenna whispered into the air between them.

“No,” Aren answered in hushed tones into that same air. “But who is sure of anything anymore.”

Syenna sat upright, her back stiff as the horse beneath her walked down the tunnel between the two sets of gates. She felt vulnerable without her armor. She especially felt the absence of her sword and scabbard. It had hung so long at her side that it had almost become a part of her. Now it lay abandoned among the pile of weapons left in the center of the city’s marketplace along with every other weapon in the town.

She turned slight in her saddle to look at Aren. She wondered for a moment why it was that his strange weapon would be the only one carried out of this place by anyone whom she was willing to call a friend. Everything had been arranged according to Aren’s will, but now, faced with the helpless reality before her, powerless before their enemies on open ground, she wondered if Aren had some private game that he was playing with all of their lives.

Aren rode on the back of his own horse beside her. He wore what remained of his Obsidian armor; the breast and back plates and one of the spike-adorned shoulder guards. He even looks like one of them, Syenna thought.

Behind them were arrayed all of the citizens of Opalis, prepared to follow them through the gates and, they hoped, to longer life.

“You’re sure about the Titans?” Syenna asked and not for the first time.

“Grannus has remained to maintain the shield,” Aren answered. “You can see that for yourself.”

“But the others…”

“Each of them has sent word,” Aren reassured her once more. “Everything is as ready as it can be made.”

“Is that ready enough?” she asked.

“Well, we are about to find out,” Aren said as their horses walked through the outer gate of the city…

Team Mathis LOVES Disney.

Not a shocking admission for most of you, but it is true, we are happier when we are getting our Disney on!

Last November Jeremy and I surprised the kids with a Disney Cruise. And, well, we had such a great time we went back 10 months later! Did I mention we love Disney?

We have cruised before….Carnival, Royal Caribbean….nothing compares to Disney. I guess that is why their ships are named the Dream, Wonder, Magic & Fantasy!

We chose the Dream for the second time. We were already going to Disney World over our Princess’s birthday, so we gave her the choice of being on land or sea for her actual birthday. Smart girl chose the sea!

I plan early. Really. Early. Yes, I love a spontaneous trip now and then, but with Disney I believe the success and ease of the trip all comes down to the planning. I booked our cruise in April, we sailed on September 25th. Early. Early. Early. Doing this allowed me to space out the payments and make my selections sooner. Now, if Jeremy gave me the OK to cruise again next week I would find a way to make it happen and all would be good, but I do enjoy the sense of calmness that comes over me when I know I have everything lined up months in advance. Go ahead and roll your eyes…it annoys even me at times! Become a member of the Castaway Club and book your Disney Cruise here.

So, booked in April. Set to sail in September.

Pixie Hollow Private Server Roblox

Sailor Pluto greeted us at the port!

Since we are Silver members of the Castaway Club, these fun gifts were waiting for us in our stateroom:

Tote Bag & Door Magnet

After enjoying a one-of-a-kind buffet for lunch, we changed into our swimwear and hit the pool.

The Sail Away Party was supposed to be on the deck by the pool, but by 4:30 it was drizzling and Minnie does not look good with wet hair, so it was moved inside to the Lobby Atrium. It happened to us last year too, so we were pros on where to stand!

We watched from our secret location and then snuck out to high-five a few friends!

The actual ‘sailing away’ is pretty cool!

With about an hour before dinner we explored the ship a bit…

A stop by the Pumpkin Tree.

Getting their Detective Casebooks to solve a mystery while on board.

Our first dinner was in the Royal Palace.

This is Cinderella’s restaurant. The servers are dressed like Prince Charming and no detail is spared. The napkins are folded like Charming’s jacket, the bread basket is Cindy’s carriage and the menu is fit for royalty.

But it’s Disney, so fun is still encouraged:

There are hidden Mickey’s EVERYWHERE in Disney. The kids, and to be honest, us adults love to spot them first and point them out to everyone else.

Check out this one:

And this one:

This was taken last year…she looks so young!

Private

After dinner we headed back to our room for a quick minute and the birthday girl was quite surprised. In true Disney style (and planning on Mama’s part), this greeted us…

While my kids don’t spend a whole lot of time in the Oceaneer’s Club (Kid’s Club), it is pretty awesome. There is a Monster’s Inc lab, Andy’s Room with all of his toys, a sweet dance floor with a giant movie screen, Pixie Hollow for crafts and dress-up…last year Natalie got to color with Tinkerbell herself! You will not get any parent guilt for dropping off the kids here!

DAY TWO:

Happy 7th Birthday Natalie!

The birthday princess awoke to a roomful of decorations…apparently the Birthday Fairy found us in the Caribbean! And she even had a few presents to open.

We stopped to visit with Princess Minnie on our way to breakfast:

Server

The night before, we wrote our names on pumpkin seeds and ‘planted’ them under the tree. Look what happened while we slept…

We opted to stay on the boat while docked in Nassau. We got off last year and spent the day at Atlantis. We had a good time, but the early morning disembark time and shuttle commute turned us off. It ended up being a great decision, we had a magical day on board!

Braids and lunch pool-side!

The Aqua Duck is a favorite of our’s. It’s a water slide that goes out over the ocean! LOOK!

The Aqua Duck

I seriously lost count of how many times we rode this slide! Well done Donald!

Once we were full of sunshine, Disney movies on the big screen, cruising on the Aqua Duck and eating at least three ice cream cones, we got changed for dinner & met up with a few pals…

Captain Jack Sparrow! He was in rare form this evening!

Peter Pan! The kids asked him to crow and it was awesome!

Next up was dancing with some Disney friends and filling our trick-or treat bags to the rim at Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party!

Our dinner this evening was at Animator’s Palate.

This is our favorite restaurant on board. It is F-U-N!

Pixie Hollow Private Server Pc

Natalie was hoping Crush would sing to her and he did!

Crush singing to Natalie. Last year he busted out the OH-IO cheer once he found out we were Buckeyes!

Nat’s birthday treat. Plus all the servers sang to her!

Mama and Daddy needed a little Cruising Beverage after dinner, so we took the kids to the Bon Voyage lounge on Deck 3. Before you get upset, know that this is a family-friendly lounge. I will admit that it was a little odd to be bellied-up to the bar with my kids, but they had fun. No doubt Natalie will ask for a Disney Shirley Temple everywhere she goes!

DAY THREE:

This day is true bliss. The ship docks at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.

The All Ashore for Castaway Cay is 8:30am and we were one of the families ready to explore the island as soon as we could. Leaving the ship early means a shorter line and a better beach location! We stopped to say hello to Olaf and Donald and then found the perfect place to call home for the day on the Family Beach.

We practically had the beach and sea to ourselves for about 30 minutes!

We swam, floated on inner tubes, snorkeled, enjoyed the floating playground, jet-skied in the open ocean, exercised our legs on a paddle boat, filled our tummies at Cookie’s BBQ and just relaxed a bit. Some day we plan to take advantage of the stingray adventure, massages, sports area, glass bottom boat rides, parasailing…we need 2 days here!

We were too busy this year to take the plunge on the awesome waterside, Pelican Plunge……. but check it out. The kids loved it last year!

The day goes so quickly while on this island. On the short walk to the shuttle pick up, we always stop by Mount Rustmore and say hello to a few old friends:

Castaway Cay has it’s own Post Office. The kids buy a post-card at the She Sells Sea Shells Shop, compose a silly note to themselves and drop it in the mailbox. This post office is on island time, so we arrive home long before their cards! A fun souvenir!

Our view of Castaway Cay from our stateroom:

When choosing your stateroom, it really is worth the splurge for a verandah…

We spend quite a bit of time admiring the sea!

Pixie Hollow Private Server Codes

Our last dinner was spent in the Enchanted Garden.

This place truly is enchanted. The large wall mural changes color as the day unfolds. It goes from a bright blue during the daytime to a beautiful red for the setting sun and finally to a nighttime sky with twinkling stars. Ma-gi-cal!

Even if you don’t want ketchup with your fries, ask for it. Your server will create a hidden Mickey with the ketchup right in front of your eyes! May have to step up my ketchup presentation!

Yep, that’s Natalie’s hand presenting the ketchup masterpiece!

The kids voted to skip the show after dinner on our last night. I would not normally recommend missing the shows, they are AMAZING. But, we had seen them all last year, so we felt ok about ditching it to ride the Aqua Duck at night! The pool area was deserted and the kids rode the slide over and over again. Jeremy and I sat in some comfy chairs and watched The Frog Princess on the big screen. A perfect ending to another magical adventure!

The next morning we sadly left our stateroom, ate a few more Mickey waffles for breakfast, disembarked the ship, boarded the bus and headed to our next Disney destination. We have agreed that 3 nights is not enough. Next cruise will be longer….for sure!

As Cinderella says, “A dream is a wish your heart makes.” and the Disney Dream has once again made our hearts happy!

Live Creatively,
